Published on: 12 May 2025 There has been a trend nowadays in workplaces which does not involve hiring externally. It's called "quiet hiring" and it happens very often. Instead of recruiting new people, companies are quietly reshuffling talent, expanding responsibilities, and covering the skill gaps from the inside. Below you will find my take on why this is a go-to move for organizations now:
1. Limited budget
Economic uncertainty and leaner teams mean bringing new headcount isn't always feasible. Quiet hiring fills the gap without additional payroll to worry about.
2. Agile is the new tactical system
Because the talent market is moving very fast, leaders have to plug skills into projects in record time. Internal mobility is much faster than external hiring and often more effective!
3. Hidden talent is existing talent
Just by participating in projects / certain meetings many employees already have the skills necessary to do more - quiet hiring just makes it more official and allows recruitment efforts to be put into roles that really require external talent.
4. When done right - it boosts retention
Providing extra challenges or new roles, people feel energized if they are recognized and supported accordingly. The downside is - if support is not provided - there is a risk of quiet burnout.
5. Traditional hiring is unable to keep up
It takes time for a role to be discussed, scoped, posted and filled. During that time business needs may shift, so quiet hiring allows companies to bridge gaps during fast-paced changes.
In the end - quiet hiring is not just a keyword, it is a shift in how we approach work, roles and career progression. The most important thing to do is provide transparency, show intention and integrity and provide employee development. What's your take on quiet hiring? Have you experienced it in your workplace?
